Somatics – Move with Ease. 3 Sessions - DATES: Saturday 11-12pm 5th Oct, 2nd Nov, 7th Dec Somatics is natural movement. Natural movement is movement that is co-ordinated through the centre of the body. Your body is a system, a living organism that innately knows how to self-regulate and self-heal. All the movements are gentle, slow, and pleasurable and are mainly done lying on a mat on the floor. Somatics is a very simple and yet very effective way to address, or prevent, long term pain. Each of these three Somatics sessions stands alone, but different movements are covered in each one. If you come to all three you will have a full “Somatics toolkit”. Kath Revell studied Somatics and Clinical Somatic Education with Martha Peterson from Essential Somatics. She also teaches Tai chi and Qigong. Session 2: Red and Green Light Reflexes This session explores two of the stress reflexes identified by Thomas Hanna, the founder of Somatics. Stress reflexes run in patterns through the body. They are self-protective, unconscious responses to danger, real or perceived, physical or emotional. The red light reflex is a “freeze” response; it is a contraction of the muscles of the front of the body in order to protect your vital organs and make yourself smaller, to hide from danger. The green light reflex is a “fight or flight” response; it is a contraction of the muscles of the back of the body, in order to make yourself bigger, to run from or fight danger. Stress reflexes are natural responses to stress and are triggered several times a day in all animals. However, whereas most animals instinctively know how to release this tension by “pandiculating” every time they get up, humans have forgotten this natural movement and so the muscular tension remains in the body. Over time it builds up, and causes problems, usually pain. We tend to think of the problems as postural, such as rounded shoulders, compressed chest, sway back, tight hips, protruding belly; but really they are the result of the inability to release habitual stress patterns. In this session you will learn how to recognise and release the red and green light reflex patterns and return your muscles to their full resting length.
